With the UK’s high tax rates and the cost of living, wealthy individuals are increasingly eyeing other destinations for better financial incentives and lifestyle benefits. In fact, nearly two-thirds of wealthy investors in the UK plan to relocate within the next two years. Read on to find out the top destinations that are piquing the interest of Britain’s wealthy.
1. USA
The United States emerged as the top choice, generating around 11,600 monthly searches related to moving. The shared language, cultural familiarity, and economic mobility make it an attractive option. The US also presents a relatively lower federal income tax rate, with a top bracket of 37% compared to the UK’s 45%. With opportunities for entrepreneurship and lifestyle perks, it’s clear why the US is so appealing.
2. Dubai
Second on the list is Dubai, with 6,030 monthly searches. Known for its tax-free income policy, Dubai stands out as an appealing destination for those looking to maximise earnings while benefiting from a high-end lifestyle. Plus, Dubai’s business-friendly environment and focus on entrepreneurship further enhance its appeal.
3. Spain
In third place, Spain attracts wealthy Brits with 5,610 searches each month. While the country has been dubbed a “tax hell” by some, Spain offers substantial tax benefits for expatriates willing to navigate its regulations.
Through the Beckham Rule, expats can enjoy a flat tax rate of 24% on Spanish income up to €600,000 and exemptions on foreign income for the first six years, providing appealing savings.
4. Ireland
Next on the list, Ireland, with 5,550 monthly searches, offers high-net-worth Brits a favourable corporate tax rate of just 12.5%. This lower tax rate has positioned Ireland as a desirable destination for British entrepreneurs and investors seeking a vibrant lifestyle close to home.
5. China
Rounding out the top five is China, with 4,760 searches each month. Although perhaps an unconventional choice, China’s rapid economic growth and increasing population of “centimillionaires” make it an attractive option. By 2040, cities like Hangzhou and Shenzhen are expected to experience rapid growth, adding to the appeal for those seeking high-return investments and opportunities.
Methodology
Avid Panda conducted a comprehensive analysis of Google search data over the past year to identify which countries high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) from the UK are most interested in relocating to. This study aimed to explore the specific destinations wealthy Brits are considering by analysing online search trends around financial and lifestyle factors that are particularly relevant to this demographic.
To guide this analysis, a seed list of terms was developed based on key factors reported as motivating HNWIs to leave the UK. These factors included tax policies, cost of living, safety, and lifestyle amenities. Avid Panda identified and tracked searches for the following key terms: “corporation tax,” “income tax,” “inheritance tax,” “crime rate,” and “luxury properties.”
Search volume for these terms was then analysed across multiple countries to determine which locations garnered the most interest. The country with the highest aggregated search volume for these terms was designated as the most desirable destination for UK-based high-net-worth individuals. This approach allowed for a data-driven assessment of the preferred destinations for wealthy individuals seeking financial advantages, improved quality of life, or a combination of both.To access the full dataset, please email lance@avidpanda.com.
